Maize is Malawi's main staple food.

The Lake

Lake Malawi occupies about one third of the Malawi land area. It is famous for its dozens of fish species, especially cichlids, and its sparkling fresh waters.

Trade

Small business is a distinctive character of Malawi life. Many roadsides are littered with vendors selling everything from fruit, through cooked foods to car parts. Indeed the Chewa word for a small group of shops is now pa 'trading'.
